The Cancer Institute
Towson, MD
St. Joseph Medical Center wanted to add medical office space to their campus and called upon Lend Lease to develop a site plan for a very congested part of the campus. Lend Lease, working with local design professionals, developed a solution that worked well for the hospital and was well-received by the physician community. The 64,000 square foot facility was completed in the fourth quarter of 2006 and included an Oncology Center and two Vaults, a major Cardiology Group, Lab and various physician practices.
During construction, the hospital administration reevaluated its business plan. The hospital embarked on creating a state-of-the-art cancer center that would house a multitude of medical specialists. The idea of the medical office building with two vaults and several large oncology groups changed and developed into the vision of The Cancer Institute. In July 2007, seven months after St. Joseph Medical Center received the Certificate of Occupancy, Lend Lease was approached by the hospital to modify the now-completed and occupied medical office building and Cancer Institute. The hospital’s vision for The Cancer Institute had changed.
Keenly aware of the St. Joseph’s vision and mission, Lend Lease gladly supported the idea of adding an atrium. At a cost in excess of $2.5 million, the atrium, which was completed in October 2007, promotes a soothing, patient-centered healing environment. Instead of the cold, impersonal atmosphere that often spreads through hospitals and cancer centers, the healing garden uses natural light, plants and other greenery, offering not only visual solace but a connection to nature and a sense of peace. Lend Lease’s quick response and support of the atrium expansion did not just change the dynamics of the building; it changed the dynamics in the landscape of a patient’s treatment.
DASCO was responsible for all phases of the project - design and construction oversight, financing and leasing.
